How to Advertise in a Magazine

So you would like the public to know of your company and services and/or products? A magazine advertisement is an excellent way to get noticed, but it is not so easy. This marketing strategy takes some effort and planning on your part in order to fully take advantage of the medium.

Which Magazine?

Magazines can be an excellent source of advertising, but you have to know which one. Besides choosing a magazine with readers that will be intrigued by your products and/or services, you most likely want to choose a magazine with a large readership. Determining the level of readership for the magazine should be one of the first aspects looked into, but sometimes the reports of readership can be misleading.

A magazine may tell you that over 100,000 people will be exposed to your ad. That sounds great but the magazine only prints about 60,000 copies. You have to consider that a decent proportion of the magazines they produce are going to dealers and newsstands meaning that a good number of magazines may never be opened at all. Also, publishers may conduct surveys to gain a sense of readership that could be misleading to the advertiser. For instance, a publisher may ask an office subscriber how many people work in the office, so the publisher will count all of the people working in that office as readers (though they may not be so). Publishers do the same with single subscriptions delivered to a library. Read the rest of this entry »

How to Write an Article Review

There are a few very simple steps to follow when you are learning how to write an article review.

First, you will need to do some research on the topic that you are reviewing. This could be as simple as going to google and doing a search. (Remember that the more research you do the better your review article is going to be.)

After you are finished researching and learning all about what your review article is pertaining to you can follow these easy steps to creating the review content.

1. Make two lists. One list is for what you like about it. The other list is for what you did not like about it.

2. Write an introduction to your article review. You want the writing to be compelling. You want your readers to keep reading past the first paragraph, so you want it to be something that drags them deeper into the article. At the same time, you want to tell them what the article is about.

For example, you could say that… company has a special offer that will blow you away in the introduction of your review article. If you said it that way a reader is going to want to know what the special offer is, so they will keep reading. Read the rest of this entry »

10 Steps to a Magazine Query

Introduction

There are two ways to submit to magazine editors.

One is to send the finished article without it being requested. This is referred to as an unsolicited manuscript. Most editors dislike reading lengthy manuscripts, and many magazines specify that they do not accept unsolicited manuscripts which, when received, are consigned to what’s called the ‘slush pile’ and seldom get read.

Another, more productive way, to submit to magazines is to send a query letter, in which you pitch your idea to the editor before actually writing the article.

A query letter is a sales pitch: your goal is to convince the editor that your article idea is of interest to her readers and that you are the best person to write it.

Query letters save everybody time. In the time that would have taken you to write a full article, you can write a few query letters which may result in more than one assignment. Query letters save editors’ time because they don’t have to read lengthy manuscripts which may not be suitable for their magazines. Read the rest of this entry »
